The Facts

Who: I'm just a guy who finally decided to change his life. Because this blog primarily acts more like a chronicle of my journey and a record of my progress than anything else, you can be confident that everything I reveal about myself is the absolute truth, and all the scientific data and facts I present about food and diet originate from what decades of experience and research have led me to believe are the best possible sources. My ultimate goal is to both help myself and, by helping others, creat a support network that will ultimately help all of us better our lives.

Whenever possible I'll site my sources for nutrition facts and records for my own personal achievements. I haven't run too many official races before, but I'll include two big ones now as a point of reference for past performance so I can accurately calculate my gains.

2013 Detroit Marathon 4:54, 11:14/mile, top 73% in age group (meaning only 27% did worse than me)
2014 Detroit Marathon (signed up for the full, only ran the half) 1:48, 8:15/mile, top 15%
What: From what I've read so far of the ketogenic, fat-burning diet, I'm 100% sure it can work (after all, it was the diet of almost every human for most of our time on earth), and 90% sure it can work for me. Of course, the only way I can be sure it to try it out and see what happens.

Where: Although anyone in the world is free to read and comment on my blog, my goal is to form a small group to enjoy high-fat, healthy, tasty, weekly dinners where members can discuss their experiences and encourage each other. Like AA, I hope that people will exchange contact information and acquire sponsors, so that if someone is tempted to eat a loaf of white bread in an extreme moment of weakness, they can call their sponsor. It might sound a bit silly on the surface, but I couldn't be more serious. We are addicts, and addicts need help in breaking their addictions. Meetings will take place in the general Metro Detroit area in peoples homes. I will start in Ferndale.

When: Rather than attempt to go cold turkey, I'm going to try to wean myself off carbohydrates gradually over the course of the next few months. I'm going all the way (hopefully not alone) January 1st. I'm starting this blog now in order to prepare myself, track my progress, and compare various levels of sports performance before and after becoming ketogenic.

Why: To look and feel better. Some people will want to focus on weight-loss, while others (like myself) care more about performance gains.

How: I've read that the first stage can take as few as two to three weeks, where one has to be very strict about not eating carbohydrates in their many forms.

20 weeks until full Ketosis

I'm not a professional athlete or nutritionist, I'm just a regular guy who finally decided to change his life. In some ways, I've been aware of nutrition (or at least the dangers of sugar) my entire life, considering I have distinct memories of getting in trouble for taking M&Ms and other candy OUT of my mom's shopping cart as small child because, even then, I knew they were terrible for us. This blog will be from the perspective of a very flawed man with bad habits (I'm actually drunk as I try to type this) attempting to change his life. I've learned plenty by reading and/or listening to countless books, articles, documentaries, and podcasts about health and nutrition over the last twenty years, and I'm certainly fitter than the average American, but I'm nowhere near my full potential. I'm just a regular guy who who has known about the benefits of becoming a fat burning man for years who finally reached his tipping point. This weekend has opened my eyes to the possibilities of consuming more fat and less of everything else. During today's bike ride, the longest I've ever biked in my entire life without consuming anything but water (with some Zipfizz), I made two incredible realizations. The second of which was that I would start this blog today detailing my long journey to becoming a fat burning man. I have so much more to write, but I'll save it for tomorrow when I'm sober (yes, I have a long way to go).

Not that anyone will read this any time soon but, to those who may read it in the future from the very beginning, expect the Who, What, Where, When, and Why tomorrow, as well as my general background and my eventual goals. Things are about to get REAL!
